About the area
With 37 clubs across Málaga and Cádiz provinces in Andalucía, the Costa del Sol offers several ways to build a golf trip. You can focus on full rounds, mix in shorter courses or choose a club with accommodation and practice facilities. Marbella, Mijas and Estepona have the largest numbers of clubs listed in the guide, followed by San Roque. Start with the courses you want to play, then choose your base.
Planning your rounds and travel
For a trip involving several clubs, group your chosen courses by municipality before planning the drives between them. Staying around one base can simplify the itinerary while still allowing you to try different layouts.
Accommodation at a golf club is another option. Hotel La Cala Resort and Finca Cortesin both have a hotel, restaurant and spa, making them worth considering if you want those facilities alongside your golf.
More than full-length rounds
Although 18-hole layouts feature widely, shorter rounds can also be part of the plan. Benalmádena Golf and Club El Candado have nine-hole courses. Hotel La Cala Resort combines the 18-hole Campo America with the nine-hole La Cala Short Course, so there is scope to vary the length of your golf days.
Look at the format as well as the hole count. Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf has a nine-hole par-three course, while The Alto Golf Club Sotogrande includes The Par - 3 and a pitch & putt. For lessons or practice between rounds, El Chaparral and Mijas Golf Club both have an academy and driving range.
Choosing by course designer
Architecture can provide another thread for your itinerary. Gary Player designed El Paraíso Golf Club, Javier Arana designed Rio Real Golf, and Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Real Club de Golf Las Brisas. Finca Cortesin and Santana Golf feature designs by Cabell B. Robinson.
These names offer a useful starting point if you enjoy choosing courses by their designer. Together with the different course formats and facilities, they give you several practical ways to shape a stay around the golf you want to play.
