About the club
For golfers visiting Vigo, in Galicia’s province of Pontevedra, Real Aero Club de Vigo brings together a nine-hole course, dedicated practice areas and a programme of club competitions. It describes itself as Galicia’s oldest golf club and the only golf course within the city of Vigo. Alongside golf, the club also holds croquet tournaments.
Playing and practising
The course has nine holes, all of which were already in place by 1972. Results from one club competition identify the course as par 70; that figure appears in the context of those competition results.
One detail worth knowing before playing concerns the first tee. Groups coming from the ninth hole alternate with groups starting their round at the first. This is part of the club’s starting arrangement, rather than a separate practice or competition format.
The practice facilities give particular attention to the short game. A spacious approach area has a green of a different type and obstacles for practising precision. There is also a prepared putting area for short-game and putting work, together with an equipped practice area for approach shots. The club has a golf academy as well, so its golf facilities extend beyond the nine-hole course.
A club with roots in Vigo
The club says Vigo has been its home since 1951. Its sports facilities opened in 1962 beside the lake from which the River Lagares originates. These are separate milestones in the club’s history: the reference to the current nine holes dates to 1972, rather than establishing a single opening date for the course.
The club calendar also includes a celebration of its 75th anniversary. Its longstanding presence in the city is accompanied by an ongoing programme of golf leagues, social competitions and other sporting activities.
Tournaments and club life
Real Aero Club de Vigo hosts events on the Circuito Open de Galicia. It also organises Semana Grande RACVIGO, with category standings and both handicap and scratch formats. Social competitions and leagues include events for senior and junior golfers, while the Torneo San Juan is another named fixture in the club’s tournament programme.
Past events illustrate the range of that activity. The XVII Semana de Oro Joven took place over three days in July 2022, while the club’s pairs tournament was played across four days in April 2023. Both individual and pairs competitions therefore feature in its sporting record.
For visitors interested in the club beyond the course, croquet is another part of its competition programme. The golf academy, croquet and the club’s other activities each have their own page in the guide.
