About the club
For golfers visiting the Basque Country, Zuia Club de Golf offers a course within Gorbea Natural Park, in the Altube area of Zuia, Álava. It lies 33 km from Bilbao and 20 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz, placing it within reach of either city for a day of golf.
Designed by Álvaro Arana Ibarra, the course combines woodland and lakes on flat terrain. One detail to note before your round is that the sixth hole is its only par 5. The setting and level ground are central features of the course, alongside a club calendar that includes around 30 tournaments a year.
A club founded by eight members
Zuia began in 1988, when eight members founded the club. Its own course opened in 1990, two years after the club was established. The distinction between those dates is part of its story: the club came first, followed by the course where its golfing activity takes place.
The club marked its 25th anniversary in 2013. By that same year, the Martes de Aiala tournament series had already reached 21 editions. It continued to appear on the club calendar in later years, linking the anniversary period with its subsequent sporting programme.
Golf with a competitive tradition
The historic Martes de Aiala is among Zuia’s established fixtures within its annual programme of around 30 tournaments. For a visitor learning about the club, it provides a sense of the continuity behind the competition calendar.
Women’s team golf also features in Zuia’s record. Its women’s team won the first edition of the Triangular Femenino de Álava, a competition held since 2006. This sits alongside the long-running Martes de Aiala as a distinct chapter in the club’s sporting history.
Academy and dining
Beyond the course, Zuia has a golf academy and a restaurant and café, each covered on a separate page in this guide. Junior teaching has included time on the course: in 2012, the children’s programme incorporated course outings so that participants could practise and gain encouragement to play.
The club’s hospitality history includes a period when catering professional Niurka Palacios managed the bar and restaurant. That is a record of a past management arrangement rather than a statement about the present operator.
Together, the course, teaching facilities and dining provision give visitors several ways to spend time at the club, with its location inside the natural park providing the setting for a visit.
